English Translation
Doha
I cleanse the mirror of my heart with the dust of the Guru’s lotus feet,
and describe the spotless glory of Lord Rama, which bestows the four fruits of life — Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.
Knowing my intellect to be weak, I meditate upon the son of the Wind God,
and ask him to bestow strength, wisdom and knowledge, and remove all afflictions and impurities.
Chaupais
Victory to you, O Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue.
Victory to the lord of the Vanaras who illuminates the three worlds.
You are the messenger of Lord Rama and the abode of incomparable strength.
You are known as the son of Mother Anjana and the Wind God.
O mighty hero, with a body as strong as the thunderbolt, you remove evil thoughts and inspire right understanding.
Your golden form is resplendent; you are beautifully adorned with earrings and curly hair.
With the thunderbolt and the banner in hand, you appear inspiring.
The sacred thread adorns your shoulder.
You are a partial manifestation of Lord Shiva and the delight of Kesari.
Your fame and radiance are revered throughout the universe.
You are knowledgeable, virtuous and wise, ever ready to carry out the work of Lord Rama.
You delight in listening to the divine stories of the Lord, and you dwell in the hearts of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita.
Assuming a tiny form you appeared before Sita;
assuming a formidable form you burnt the city of Lanka.
Taking a mighty form you destroyed the demons,
and skillfully accomplished the tasks of Lord Rama.
You brought the life-restoring herb to revive Lakshmana,
which brought great joy to Lord Rama, who embraced you warmly.
Lord Rama praised you greatly and declared,
“You are as dear to Me as My brother Bharata.”
Thousands of beings chant your glories,
and so speaking, Lord Rama embraced you again.
Sanaka, Brahma, Narada, Saraswati and Shesha sing of your virtues.
Even Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the directions glorify you.
How then can a mere poet describe your fame?
You helped Sugriva and united him with Rama,
and Lord Rama granted him kingship.
By your counsel, Vibhishana obtained the kingdom of Lanka — this is known to the whole world.
When still a child, you leaped across the ocean and swallowed the Sun, mistaking it for a fruit.
Carrying the Lord’s ring in your mouth you crossed the ocean — this was not a wonder for you.
By your grace, difficult tasks in this world become easy.
You guard the gate of Lord Rama;
no one enters without your permission.
All happiness rests at your feet.
Those whom you protect have nothing to fear.
You alone can control your own immense power;
your roar makes the three worlds tremble.
Ghosts, spirits and evil beings do not come near
when the name of the mighty Hanuman is spoken.
Diseases and pains are removed for those
who constantly repeat your holy name.
Those who meditate upon Hanuman in thought, word and deed
are freed from all adversity.
Lord Rama is the supreme ascetic king;
you accomplish all the tasks of His devotees.
Whoever seeks anything from you with sincerity
receives the highest reward of human life.
Your glory is celebrated through all four ages
and shines throughout the world.
You are the protector of saints and sages,
and the destroyer of demons, beloved of Lord Rama.
You are the bestower of the eight siddhis and the nine treasures;
this boon was granted to you by Goddess Sita.
You hold the elixir of devotion to Lord Rama,
and will ever remain His faithful servant.
Through devotion to you one reaches Lord Rama
and becomes free of sorrows of many births.
At the end of life, one attains the abode of Lord Rama
and is born thereafter as His devotee.
There is no need to seek any other deity;
worship of Hanuman alone brings all happiness.
All troubles and sufferings are removed
for one who remembers the mighty Hanuman.
Victory, victory, victory to you, O Hanuman,
O master, bless us as a revered Guru.
One who recites this Chalisa a hundred times
becomes free from bondage and enjoys supreme bliss.
Whoever reads the Hanuman Chalisa
is blessed — this is witnessed by Lord Shiva.
Tulsidas, the eternal servant of the Lord, prays:
“May my Lord dwell within my heart.”
